Review: The Pursuit of Happyness

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007 | Inspiration, Movies | No Comments

I finally got to see The Pursuit of Happyness about a month ago at Century 22 Winchester, and after leaving the movie, I felt a bit inspired. Will Smith did an excellent job portraying Chris Gardner, a salesman in the early 80’s in San Francisco who sold a product (bone density scanners) that many people didn’t need. The difficulty he had in selling the scanners made it hard to make ends meet to support his wife, played by Thandie Newton, and his son, played by his real-life son, Jaden Smith. His wife eventually leaves him and he’s left to take care of his young son, while he takes on a Dean Witter internship for a chance to become a stock broker, while limited in funds. Although he has some money, it easily disappears when he has to take into account daycare, bills, parking tickets, taxes, back taxes, and shoes. The movie has some flaws, but they could be easily overlooked as Will Smith’s performance takes spotlight. It’s probably his best performance to date.

Chris Rock on the World Going Crazy

Thursday, July 20th, 2006 | Inspiration | No Comments

You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America’s Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn’t want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named Bush, Dick, and Colon. Need I say more?

Today is a Gift

Our Deepest Fear

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

- Marianne Williamson, excerpt from “A Return to Love”
